Choosing a vet, what if you could? For every condition and illness, what if you could pick and choose out of all vet physicians in your area which ones to help with your pet’s health. It may be that you can, depending on your insurer, but chances are you’ll be limited to a network of physicians.
Within that network we believe you are sure to find someone great. But we have a couple suggestions and things to keep in mind on the question of being able to choose your own vet that we believe will really help you out.
1. Word of mouth: word of mouth vet suggestions are far better than anything you can find on YELP or other review boards. Those are often filled with either amazing stories or really sad ones concerning vet visits. So ask your friends and neighbors about their vet hospital and correlating insurance experiences…. or check back here, we update our site daily on pet insurance news that may be relevant.
2. Make a list: If you are able make a list of a few vet hospitals or physician names that you want to be able to visit you can have something to reference when shopping for pet insurance. This can also help if specific physicians will make or break your decision on a pet insurer.
3. In our experience, a number of the larger popular insurers allow you to choose your vet. But as the pet health industry continues to grow and diversify, we may see segmentation by insurer and vet.
So think about this; all the physicians you have seen; those by choice, some because you needed emergency care and others because they were specialist. You have your favorites and your dog should too, even if you have to pick the vet for them
We hope this helps you be prepared. Also, if you don’t have any vet physicians in mind, when doing your search ask if they are AAHA-accredited. The American Animal Health Association serves a number of purposes like improving practice operations and skills and encouraging overall service for a veterinary practice. These types of certifications help establish a veterinary practice as one that can be trusted.
