Like with regular health care plans for us humans, we also have the options to choose discount or comprehensive plans for our pets. Discount insurance policies in particular, are there to provide us with some savings opportunities on pet medical care when taken to a contracted pet physician with usually a fair premium. When deciding on a healthcare plan for your pet we understand one of the first concerns is that of premium costs. Our immediate suggestion is to make sure you are aware of the associated factors on premiums like breed type or hereditary conditions and special services (lost and found rewards, chronic disease coverage). This is where your costs can vary dramatically as different health care providers carry vastly different rates.
Comprehensive
Comprehensive policies will always be a little more costly because they are accompanied with better options and preventative health care features. Concerning monthly premiums, we have found that they can vary anywhere from 10.00 - 90.00 dollars. And this is all across the board, distributed fairly evenly. Mainly due to what is included in your comprehensive insurance plan. Some common features of a comprehensive plan include coverage of 85% or more of all incidents costs usually after deductible and/or co-pay. Our advice is to first determine what you absolutely need. With pets; spaying and neutering, age, genetic/chronic conditions are common inclusions in comprehensive policies.
Below are two sample plans that would be commonly considered comprehensive policies:

Things to Note |
|
$30.00 |
$80 deductible. Pays 70% on approved claims. Covers all accidents and illnesses; kennel fees to $250; Annual exams and vaccinations. |
The low premium looks great, but in this case it keeps you out of some services like prescription drug coverage. |
|
$50.00 |
$250 annual deductible. Pays 80% of eligible expenses after deductible and co-pay. Covers all accidents, illnesses and does not exclude hereditary conditions or behavior modification. This plan includes preventive care benefits such as spay/neuter, heartworm testing and prevention and physical and dental cleaning. |
From our research this is a pretty common mid level comprehensive coverage plan. The preventative care is nice, as it includes heartworm testing and dental cleaning. |

In your research you will find a number of options associated with premium insurance offers that are really inviting and may even be completely applicable to your pets needs. But if you are in the know about your pet’s breed and hereditary issues you may find that a basic plan can cover all the bases just as well. As you can guess a basic pet insurance plan will often not include any real across the board coverage, for example, you may find a basic plan that offers 90% coverage on incident costs, but along with that figure is also a list of the type of incidents you will have to pay for on your own. Below you will find two sample plans we drew up for you to study through.

Things to Note |
|
$8.00 |
$75 deductible. Up to 1800 for selected accidents. Cover accidents to 80%. No illness coverage |
On selected accidents; make sure you are aware of which accidents are covered, and if your pet is susceptible to such accidents. |
|
$18.00 |
$200 deductible. Cover accidents and illnesses to 80% Optional wellness coverage for additional fee. |
If you are considering the higher end of the basic plans, and you notice phrases like, “with optional fee.” It doesn’t hurt to look into low end comprehensive coverage; that “optional fee” can really add up. |
Now, remember if you really think it through, there are ways to maximize that basic coverage. Consider your pet’s activites, where they frequent, genetic illnesses, and make sure you aren’t paying for service you probably will not need. One such service is the pet found reward… This really isn’t something I would care for if we were living in a rural area or small town.
We hope this answers some questions concerning basic or comprehensive coverage and is a good start to insuring your loved one.
