Does Pet Insurance Vary By State?

Sure they do, but it isn’t the state thats really the determining factor, it’s the providers you’ll find in varying states. Most providers ask for your zip code if you are looking to get a quote online to help you determine if there is insurance available in your area. I just read that in addition to all the states below, Trupanion just added Nevada to their list of state where pet health insurance is available. I’m sure this is happening with a lot of insurers as they are growing.

One smart thing you can do however, that involves your state and pet insurance, is to get to know associated laws that require actions owners might have to take with their Pets. For example, a few years ago Rhode Island became the first state to require dog and cat owners to spay or neuter their pets older than 6 months of age. The fine was $75.00 for not doing so or the owner had the option to license themselves as breeders for $100.00. You might wonder how this would affect your insurance policy, but the truth is that just about every condition the state might want to set on pet ownership can be related to a service or specific converage on your pet insurance policy. In this case, a number of basic insurance options for pets include spaying or neutering. We suggest keeping up with state laws on pet ownership or just making sure you thoroughly understand conditions set in whichever pet plan you decide on.

With that said, I wouldn’t worry so much about the status of your state with a certain provider if you have one in mind, as much as I would on finding one that comfortable meets your requirements, and the conditions in which your pet will be spending its life in.
